Authentic Irish Potato Farls Recipe: Easy & Delicious

  • Author: Elyna
  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 6 farls 1x

Description

Authentic Irish Potato Farls are a traditional dish made with simple ingredients like mashed potatoes, flour, and butter. Pan-fried to golden perfection, these farls are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, making them a comforting addition to breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They’re quick to prepare and bring a touch of Ireland to your table.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups (650g/1lb 7oz) of mashed potatoes (from 3 medium potatoes such as Russet, Maris Piper, or Roosters)
  • ¾ cup (4oz/115g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons (1oz/28g) butter (plus more for cooking)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes

  1. Peel and chop your potatoes before weighing them for accuracy.
  2. Steam or boil the cubed potatoes in a medium pot until tender, about 20-25 minutes.
  3. Drain the potatoes and place them in a sieve over a bowl, letting them dry slightly for 5 minutes.

Step 2: Mash the Potatoes

  1. While still warm, press the potatoes through a sieve for a light and fluffy texture. Alternatively, use a potato ricer or masher if a sieve isn’t available.

Step 3: Form the Dough

  1. In a large bowl, mix the mashed potatoes with the flour, salt, pepper, and melted butter.
  2. Stir the mixture until it forms a soft dough ball.

Step 4: Shape the Farls

  1. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and flatten it into an 8-inch round disc.
  2. Using a large knife, cut the disc into six equal triangular pieces.

Step 5: Cook the Farls

  1. Heat a large frying pan or skillet over medium heat and melt a generous knob of butter until bubbling.
  2. Carefully place the potato farls in the pan and cook for about 5 minutes on one side, or until golden brown.
  3. Flip the farls and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes until both sides are crisp and the interior is fluffy.

Step 6: Serve

  1. Remove the farls from the pan and serve hot. They pair wonderfully with a traditional Irish breakfast or can be enjoyed on their own with butter.

Notes

  • Use finely mashed potatoes for a smoother dough.
  • Dry the potatoes slightly before mashing to avoid excess moisture.
  • Cook on medium heat to ensure even browning without burning.
